Test Drive

I had the pleasure on 8/31/2021 of taking this vessel out for a "Sea Trial" with the owner and a local diesel mechanic. The sea were relatively calm with little wind.

From the Newport Beach breakwater we headed south, south west to Crystal Cove. The boat came up to plane in less than 12 seconds. We reached a top speed of over 25.2 MPH ( Speed over ground on the GPS) and stayed between 24 and 25.2.

Engine temperature ran between 200-215 with 195 degree thermostats. After a full throttle run from the breakwater to the end point at Crystal Cove and back,we ran less than 210 degrees.

Engines start right up with an initial "puff" then idle clean. Around 1400 RPM's when the turbo kicks in, there was an initial "Puff" of black smoke and this clears up quickly and then burns clean. Very likely due to lack of use (Less than 600 hours on the motors). We topped out at 2010 RPM's. There were no vibrations indicating and shaft or prop issues. Bottom most likely needs to be cleaned.

Update

We hauled the vessel on 9/22 for a below the water line inspection. The bottom paint is nearing the end of it's useful life: for the next coat, it's recommended to remove the old layers. While we had the bottom cleaned it needs to be redone to remove some remaining hard growth on the props. We also scheduled zincs to be installed. Props have a good "bell tone" with no marks on the edges. Cutlass Bearings are good. Rudders are tight indicating all's as it should be.

On the sea trial with 12-14 Knot winds and a good swell, heading S/SW we actually hit over 28.3 MPH (SOG) at 2139 RPM's. The boat ran clean, even when the turbos kicked in and engine temps stayed well below 200 w 195 thermostats. Engines were cool to the touch and registered even cooler with the laser thermometer. Very easy cruising at 1800 RPMs.
